Separate Bet closed his 2009 season at Remington Park on May 30 with his third win in as many stakes attempts, scoring by a head in the $200,000 Remington Park Championship. In the process, he defeated the ‘World’s Fastest Horse,” First Moonflash, a holder of three world records. Running for the first time outside the state of New Mexico, First Moonflash finished off the board in fifth.
After winning and setting track records in his two previous stakes attempts this season at Remington Park, Separate Bet held favoritism from the fans, leaving the starting gate at 7-5 odds. Owned by the Weatherford, Okla. partnership of Jimmy Harrel, Duane Harrel and Jo Ann Adams, the gray 5-year-old gelding is trained by Paul Jones and was ridden by Cody Jensen as he battled back from a slow start to catch Here To Entertain in winning by a head.
“He didn’t get the greatest of starts,” Jensen noted. “When you get a horse that is running on a win streak, they can still get behind a little bit and think they can win. He just ran down Here To Entertain and beat him at the end.”
The final time for the Grade 1 Remington Park Championship at 440 yards was 21.301 seconds.
A California-bred by Separatist from the First Down Dash mare Better Bet On Me, Separate Bet won his 11th career race from 23 attempts. It was his third career win at Remington Park. The winner’s check of $120,000 pushes his career earnings to $635,113.
